The group of mages fell silent immediately. The man who had advanced on the Leader lay sprawled on the grass, gazing up at the Egyptian with fear bordering on reverence. The redheaded twin and the Italian had appeared flanking the frail bodied Leader who was pale and swaying unsteadily on his feet. The mages watched with trepidation as his eyes began to dim from their glowing white to the natural pale blue.
‘Thank you.’ Lachlan said quietly, his body trembling with the effort of standing. Rama was beside his husband instantly, an arm around the small waist, helping hold the man up as the Leader turned to the female who had spoken before. ‘You cannot use your magic here because of the protections in place. None of you can.’ The woman looked sheepishly to the ground. ‘There is nothing wrong with you, other than the fact that while you are here, you cannot use your magic.’ Lachlan said addressing the man who had asked previously. ‘And I have done nothing to you.’ The Leader said stepping forward and raising a hand.
The mages took a collective step back as the man lying on the grass was lifted into the air and slammed down forcefully on his feet, staggering slightly.
‘If you so much as utter that word in my presence again, I promise to break every bone in your miserable body.’ Lachlan said closing the distance between himself and the mage who was stooped over. The Leader placed a finger to the man’s chin, tilted his face up and looked down into the fearful eyes. ‘You are guests here, at the bequest of your master. Be thankful that I have allowed you here.’ The Leader stepped back and addressed the group of mages as a whole. ‘Understand that you are all defectors from our enemy. While you are here, none of you will use your magic. Nor will I tolerate the ignorance of the Order.’
‘Lachlan, please accept our apology.’ One of the mages said as he stepped forward. The Leader looked to the man and recognised Johan. ‘Tristan is the newest of our rank and had less time to come to terms with what the Order was doing.’
‘Understood. Remind him to hold his tongue until the ignorance has faded.’ The Leader said with a wink to Johan. ‘Alex and Jaden will find you all somewhere to sleep for the night and in the morning we will find a more permanent solution.’
‘Thank you.’ Johan said stepping forward and offering his hand to the Leader. Lachlan shook it briefly before Rama was beside him again holding him up surreptitiously. The Egyptian and the Leader watched as Alex and Jaden led the group of mages toward the buildings, talking quietly between themselves.
‘I don’t want Tristan at this Sanctuary after tomorrow.’ The Leader said quietly.
‘Neither do I.’ His husband replied as they made their way slowly to their private cabin.
‘Good morning handsome.’ The blond said with a smile as he crawled onto the bed.
‘Good morning my love. Have you been awake long?’ Alex asked of his husband, reaching out a hand to him, gesturing for him to come further up the bed. The blond obeyed and was soon snuggling against his husband.
‘A half hour or so. I made you a coffee.’ Quinn said pointing to the night stand beside the bed. Alex reached for the steaming cup and scanned the thoughts of those nearby.
‘All seems quiet.’ The Italian mentioned as he sat up in the bed, Quinn shuffling around and resting his head on Alex’s shoulder.
‘Yeah, Fabrizio left a few minutes ago to check on Mikhail.’ The blond reported quietly.
‘How’s Georgie?’ Alex asked after a mouthful of coffee.
‘He’s okay. Still sleeping I think.’
‘I want to stay in bed all day, but I know there are things I need to do.’ Alex sighed quietly, the blond giggling to himself.
‘Alas, it would be nice to spend all day in bed, but we do have things we need to take care of. Lachlan asked me to help out with the mages, seeing as I’m the Holy Strega, he thought it might be easier for the mages to listen to me.’ Quinn said with a smile.
‘If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you’re beginning to like being the Holy.’ Alex laughed softly.
‘It has its perks.’ Quinn said blushing.
‘Ah, my handsome husband has grown into his shoes.’ The Italian laughed squeezing the blond against his side playfully.
‘Come on!’ Quinn said extricating himself from the Italian’s death grip. ‘Let’s go and check on Mikhail.’ Alex gulped the remainder of his coffee and tossed the cup lightly into the air, waved a hand in the direction of the kitchen as the cup zoomed off through the cabin. The Italian climbed out of bed and pulled on a pair of faded jeans and a long sleeve black shirt, his socks and shoes, while Quinn pulled on some socks and his track shoes. When they were dressed, they exited the cabin, Alex telepathically checking on his older cousin Giorgio, who was indeed sleeping still, and made their way to the Leader’s cabin. They walked around the building and found the Leader and Rama sitting on the back deck enjoying a morning coffee and cigarette.
‘Morning handsome ones.’ Rama said with a bright smile, Lachlan smiling over his coffee cup.
‘Hi guys.’ Alex said as Quinn hopped onto the deck and bent over to hug Lachlan and Rama, Alex following suit.
‘How’s the big guy today?’ Alex asked as he and his husband sat down companionably with Lachlan and Rama.
‘He seems to be okay so far. We’ve been monitoring his sleep and he seems to be quite well.’ Rama answered for his husband, who was still looking mildly pale.
‘And what about you?’ Quinn asked looking to the frail, dark haired man.
‘I’m alright.’ Lachlan said with a wink and smile for the blond. ‘Just a little tired I guess.’
‘Well, be sure to rest up today.’ The blond said with a crooked smile.
‘The big guy’s awake if you wanna go see him?’ Rama said gesturing to the door. Alex nodded as Quinn’s smile intensified, the both of them standing up and heading through the sliding door. They slipped quietly through the cabin and into one of the guest rooms, just as Monica was walking to the door.
‘Morning guys.’ She said quietly. ‘I was just coming to get you.’
‘Oh?’ Alex asked curiously.
‘I asked her to get you.’ Mikhail said softly from the bed. Alex was instantly beside the Russian, holding a meaty hand in his own and smiling brightly.
‘It’s so good to have you back big guy.’ Alex said warmly, squeezing the giant’s hand.
‘I’m so sorry Alex. I should have told someone.’ Mikhail said sadly.
‘Hey, hey! Don’t. Everyone is fine, okay?’ Alex said with a small laugh.
‘I’m so stupid.’ Mikhail stated baldly.
‘Oh come now Rasputin!’ Quinn said with a grin as he walked around the bed swiftly. ‘You’re not that stupid.’
‘Come here you shit.’ Mikhail guffawed as he lurched out of bed and grabbed Quinn’s forearm, pulling him onto himself and squeezing him in a bear hug.
‘Don’t break him.’ Alex laughed watching his best friend roughly hugging his husband. Quinn spotted the person beside Mikhail and gasped quietly.
‘Privet.’ The man said shyly, Alex wasn’t entirely sure he had heard him speak.
‘Nikolai, ty prosnulsya.’ Mikhail said happily.
‘Wait a moment.’ Alex said quietly as he waved a hand in front of himself. ‘Okay, can everyone understand me?’
‘Da.’ Mikhail and Nikolai said in unison, the blond nodding as he climbed off the Russian giant and stood beside his husband.
‘Nikolai, this is my good friend Alex, and his husband Quinn.’ Mikhail said gesturing to the Italian and the Canadian.
‘It is good to meet you.’ Nikolai said in clear and concise English, due to the telepathic connection Alex had established between the four men, so they could understand each other.
‘They were part of the group that rescued us last night.’ The giant said with a bright smile for his two friends.
‘I’m glad you’re both alright.’ Quinn said with his trademark smile. Nikolai smiled in reply before a grimace stole over his face.
‘Easy there Nikolai. You’ll still be a bit sore for a few days.’ Quinn said softly as Alex telepathically assessed the young Russian.
‘Where are we?’ Nikolai asked as the pain passed.
‘Somewhere safe. We rescued you both last night and got you out of Russia. Quinn and a few others did the best they could to heal you while you were asleep.’ Alex answered the man, still scanning his thoughts as they took a turn toward the dark.
‘They… they did things to me.’ Nikolai said, his eyes brimming with tears.
‘No, no, no. Don’t think on that at the moment.’ Alex said quickly, wondering what to do as Rama stepped into the room and waved a hand toward the bed.
‘Best we keep him off those thoughts for a few days.’ He said quietly before he disappeared out of the room, Nikolai’s eyes drying and a smile lingering about his mouth.
‘I want to get up.’ Mikhail said sounding like a petulant child.
‘Come on then, let’s go for a walk.’ Alex said gesturing for the two Russian’s to climb out of bed. Mikhail threw himself out from under the covers and was on his feet within seconds. Nikolai was a little slower, almost hesitant, before Quinn discovered why. Mikhail was wearing no clothes; his soft white skin glowing slightly in the morning sunlight, and Nikolai was in similar dress, pulling a sheet over his lap. The blond swooped to the closet and fished out a dressing gown, appearing in front of the smaller Russian, placing the gown on his lap. Quinn re-joined his husband and Mikhail, all three men giving Nikolai the privacy of their backs as he pulled the robe on, Mikhail pulling on a pair of jeans and a lightweight t-shirt. Nikolai wavered on his feet as he stood up, Mikhail turning in time to see it, was instantly in front of his friend, holding the man up.
‘You alright Nikolai?’ The giant asked softly, making sure his friend didn’t fall.
‘Da.’ Nikolai said nodding his head shakily. ‘Just dizzy.’
‘Well, let’s get outside and get some fresh air.’ Alex said as he stepped out of the bedroom, followed by Quinn.
‘Fabz!’ The Canadian said as he spotted the youngest Italian sitting on the deck with the Leader and Rama.
‘Hi!’ Fabrizio said happily, watching his giant boyfriend helping the smaller Russian to the sliding door. ‘Need a hand Mickey?’
‘No, we’re okay I think.’ Mikhail said with a huge smile plastered across his face. ‘You were in the room earlier, zàyka?’
‘Yeah, but I went to get some breakfast. When I got back, Lachlan told me Alex and Quinn were with you, so I had a coffee with him.’ The smallest Italian said stepping beside his gigantic boyfriend who leaned over and kissed the man softly.
‘Nikolai, this is my boyfriend Fabrizio. Zàyka, this is my friend Nikolai.’ Mikhail introduced the two men.
‘Nice to meet you.’ Fabrizio said holding a hand out to the smaller Russian, Nikolai shaking the offered hand gently.
‘Likewise.’ Nikolai said with a smile, Fabrizio frowning with confusion.
‘You speak very good English.’ The youngest Italian stated.
‘Actually, that’s my doing.’ Alex said with a laugh. ‘Telepathic translation.’ Fabrizio giggled with understanding.
‘Well, let’s go for a walk. I want to get out into the sun.’ Mikhail said leading his friend to the sliding door and out onto the grass where both men sighed with pleasure.
‘Don’t go too far guys. And don’t overdo it.’ Lachlan said with a smile after lighting a cigarette.
‘I overheard William talking about someone spying on us.’ Mikhail said with an arm around Nikolai, Fabrizio snuggled up on his other side, Alex and Quinn sitting opposite them cuddling, the sunlight filtering through the trees and reflecting off the water of the river a few feet from them.
‘Don’t worry. It was Drew.’ Alex said with a nod.
‘Really?’ Mikhail asked curiously.
‘Yeah, Drew was an incubus. Lachlan, Mamma and the aunts sorted him out.’ Alex replied with a smile, spotting the two men in question walking down the bank with trays. ‘Here they come.’ Mikhail turned around and spotted Giorgio and Drew walking toward them, each carrying a tray of food.
‘Morning guys.’ Giorgio said as he reached the small group of people and sitting down with the tray.
‘Hi Georgie. Drew.’ Mikhail said with a smile which vanished immediately when he saw the look on the two men’s faces. ‘What?’
‘My name is Gabriel.’ The man that Mikhail knew as Drew said with a Brazilian accent.
‘Oh shit.’ Mikhail said with embarrassment.
‘Don’t worry about it.’ Gabriel said with a smile. ‘Just another complicated issue to add to the others.’
‘I’m confused.’ Nikolai said, his face displaying that precise sentiment.
‘It’s a long story.’ Alex said as the Brazilian sat down beside him and placed the tray of food in the middle of everyone, Giorgio placing his beside it.
‘We brought you guys some breakfast.’ Giorgio said with a smile as everyone helped themselves to a piece of toast and coffee.
‘And how are you guys going?’ Alex spoke after a few moments of awkward silence.
‘Okay I suppose.’ Giorgio replied for himself and Gabriel.
‘Still coming to terms with everything, but, discovering a few things about myself as well.’ Gabriel smiled broadly, Giorgio looking at the Brazilian surreptitiously.
‘And what does that mean?’ Quinn queried, sure that most present were dying to know what that comment meant.
‘I understand what happened between us was mostly the demon’s doing. But I won’t deny the feelings I have for Giorgio.’ Everyone smiled at this comment. ‘I’ve been getting to know Giorgio better, of my own volition, and am beginning to see what the demon saw in him.’ Quinn’s smile was at maximum wattage by this point. Gabriel reached over and took Giorgio’s hand and squeezed it tenderly.
‘Does that mean, what I think it means?’ Giorgio asked under his breath, almost fearful of the answer.
‘Yes Georgie.’ Gabriel said happily, his smile shy at first. ‘I would like to be in a relationship with you, if you are up for it?’
‘You bet your sexy arse I’m up for it!’ Giorgio cheered excitedly as the small crowd broke into cheers and applause, Quinn wiping a tear of happiness from his eye.
‘Best news ever.’ Mikhail cheered happily, pulling Fabrizio tight into his chest as he squeezed Nikolai into his side. Alex leaned over and kissed Quinn softly on the cheek, everyone openly displaying their love for one another in a spur of the moment celebration.
‘I’m sorry to interrupt, but Lachlan asked if Quinn could join him shortly with the mages.’ Rama said after clearing his throat loudly. Quinn shot to his feet and smiled.
‘Lead the way Ramz.’ The blond said with a cheeky smile, winking to his husband as he followed the Egyptian.
‘I think I need to lie down.’ Nikolai said quietly as he watched the two men walking away. Alex was on his feet beside the smaller Russian offering both his hands to help him up. Slowly Nikolai got to his feet with Alex’s assistance. ‘See you guys later.’ Nikolai said to the remaining few, allowing his friend time to be with his lover.
‘Are you okay walking, or would you like me to carry you?’ Alex asked with a hand around the smaller man’s shoulders.
‘I’m a little tired.’ Nikolai began but fell silent in embarrassment.
‘Allow me.’ Alex said stepping behind the Russian and telekinetically enhancing himself, lifted the man into his arms gently. ‘Feeling alright?’
‘Yeah, just a little embarrassed.’ Nikolai said going slightly pink in the face.
‘Think nothing of it.’ Alex said gallantly as he carried the Russian toward the Leader’s private cabin, Nikolai barely jostling in the secure arms of the Italian. Alex stepped into the living room of the cabin and saw Grayson sitting in a corner quietly.
‘Just taking Nikolai back to bed, he’s a bit tired.’ Alex said when Grayson looked up and saw the two men, eyebrow raised in question.
‘I’ll watch over him for you Alex.’ Grayson said with a warm smile to the two men. Alex nodded back and continued into the guest room, safely depositing the exhausted Russian on the bed with little jostling.
‘Sleep well Nikolai.’ Alex said in farewell, tenderly grasping the man’s shoulder in his hand.
‘Thank you Alex.’ The Russian blushed pink again as Alex stepped to the door.
‘Grayson will be in the lounge if you need anything.’ The Italian said as he stepped through the door and pulled it closed behind him, wondering what all the blushing was about.
‘To clarify, while you are in any of the Sanctuary’s, your powers will not work. The Sanctuaries have telepathic shields protecting them from intrusion and most forms of supernatural activity.’ The blond said loudly and clearly to the group of assembled mages. He looked over the apprehensive faces and recognised their anxiety.
‘Who are you?’ One of the mages nearer the back called out, Quinn unable to identify the person who spoke.
‘I am the Holy Strega, the Holy of the Stregheria, a coven of Witches that originated in Italy. My grandmother was the Holy before me, and my mother should have taken the role of The Holy, but passed it to me for her own reasons. I wield magic, much like you do.’ Quinn felt a small relaxation in the group of mages in hearing the small similarity to themselves.
‘This place isn’t for Witches or Mages though.’ The same voice called out.
‘Not necessarily.’ Lachlan interceded. ‘Initially the Sanctuary was created for those who belong to the Children of Light, people like myself. We don’t wield magic. We have telekinetic abilities, telepathy, precognition, psionic enhancement, abilities from the mind. But we have always been open to those of other supernatural backgrounds. In fact, when I was a child, we had a mage living with us. One of my good friends learnt from him your craft.’
‘Why did the Archivist send us with you?’ Another mage asked.
‘Ernest, the man you call the Archivist, was concerned for your safety if you were to remain within the Order. He knew that William was not sympathetic to the supernatural and would have at any time turned on you all. Ernest is rapidly approaching his end and entrusted your safety and protection to me.’ The Leader answered with fond remembrance of the man known as Ernest.
‘How do you know what he wanted? We saw the exchange between you and him.’ One mage asked as another asked another question after her.
‘Why should he entrust our safety to you? You’re not a mage, and you’re young. Are you the leader here?’
‘He asked me to take you because I have the ability to protect you all from William, and by extension the Order.’ Lachlan answered the first mage then turned to the second mage. ‘You’re right, I’m not a mage. I don’t wield magic as I said before. But because my abilities are seated in my, for want of a better term, brain, I am in effect immune to most “magics” and can shield myself quite effectively from most spells. And I’m not entirely that young, as many of my friends would love to tell you.’ The frail man said with a giggle. ‘And I am not the leader of this particular Sanctuary.’ He began, watching the faces of the mages display shock, anger, fear and concern, a quiet humming of hushed words from the mages; precisely what he was anticipating. ‘I am in fact the Leader of all the Sanctuaries, of all the Children of Light.’
Silence fell, and every mages mouth fell open in disbelief. The Leader laughed internally at their reaction, giving them a few moments to form their own thoughts.
‘The Archivist called you something. What was it?’ A female asked from nearer the front, her hazel eyes fixed excitedly on the frail man.
‘Yeah, I heard that too.’ A male mage added, several of the others nodding.
‘Mac de Grian.’ Lachlan said clearly over the dim hum of wondering voices. ‘It’s my proper title, a title I was given at my wedding.’
‘What does it mean?’ The woman asked again, leaning forward in her eagerness. The Leader smiled to her.
‘”Son of Sun” is the literal translation. The man who gave me the title said that it meant I was born of the Sun, that I am a piece of the Sun itself.’ Lachlan explained to further hums of eager conversation.
‘And this here is “Sgàile de a’Gealach”, the Spirit of the Moon.’ The Leader said holding an extended arm out to Quinn, who stepped toward the Leader and was drawn into a one armed hug.
‘And he’s a witch?’ One of the mages at the back asked.
‘Yes.’ Quinn said with a smile. ‘My husband, Alex, whom you all saw last night, is one of the three leaders of this sanctuary.’
The group of mages all made noises of understanding and comprehension as Lachlan caught the gist of their collective thoughts.
“We’ve got them. They believe us, and better yet, trust us.’ The Leader communicated with the blond who continued to smile to the crowd.
‘What do you ask of us?’ Tristan asked respectfully, bowing his head to Quinn and Lachlan, the latter curious at the turn of attitude from the mage.
‘With the Order still operating in shadow, you are not safe outside of the Sanctuary’s protections. Yet we are unable to support all of you at any one particular Sanctuary.’ The Leader began as Quinn slipped away unnoticed from his side and walking to the edge of the Circle and spotting his husband walking through the trees, followed by a small group of people. The blond embraced the tall Italian lovingly and he and the small group of people walked over and fanned out behind the Leader.
‘Behind me are the Leaders of a few of the Sanctuaries. Sam from Canada.’ Lachlan said gesturing to the man who was of equal height to himself, as he raised a hand in greeting to the crowd. ‘AJ of the Western American Sanctuary.’ The Leader said with a wave to the tall, tanned surfer with sparkling eyes. ‘James of the New Zealand Sanctuary.’ The Leader indicated the tall Kiwi who smiled broadly and waved to the mages. ‘And lastly, Alex, Jaden and Caiden of this Sanctuary.’ Lachlan said indicating the tall Italian, who’s smaller husband was tucked under his arm, and the blond and redheaded twins, all three men smiling and waving to the mages.
‘Can we choose where we go?’ One of the mages asked inquisitively.
‘Do you have a preference?’ The Leader asked of the mage who asked, she and several others nodding. ‘Where is your preference?’
‘With him.’ The female mage said pointing in the direction of Alex, who was surprised at being singled out.
‘Why me?’ Alex asked with curiosity.
‘It’s not you I’m pointing at. I meant him, the Holy.’ The female mage said gesturing over-exaggeratedly at the Italian’s husband.
‘I’m not a Leader here.’ The blond said honestly.
‘No, but you’re the husband of one of them, and wherever he is, you will be, and I want to be there.’ The mage said with a smile, several of the mages around her nodding and murmuring in agreement. The Leader thought for a moment and spoke.
‘How many of you wish to remain here?’ He asked of the group. The female mage raised her hand immediately, seven people around her raised their hands almost as quickly, the Leader noticing Johan and Tristan were among them.
‘Will you all please step to the side?’ Lachlan said gesturing to a spot a small distance to the side and the eight mages quietly and briskly moved to the side. ‘Which leaves us with nine. Do any of you have a preference with whom you go with?’ The remaining mages all mumbled quietly amongst themselves, unsure what to do.
‘Why don’t we, for the time being, take three each to our Sanctuary, and maybe in a few hours, they can go to another Sanctuary, and see which one they like more?’ James asked of the Leader, thinking of an easy way to relax the mages into a decision.
‘I suppose that could work. Would you guys like to take three each of the mages, and show them around the different Sanctuary’s? Lachlan asked of the three Leaders’. Sam, James and AJ stepped forward and spoke with the mages, and eventually had three mages each and heading for the veil.
‘And now you guys.’ The Leader said carefully as he turned to the eight mages who had opted to remain. ‘You all wish to remain here?’ They all nodded enthusiastically. ‘Alright then. We’re going to need more housing, but that shouldn’t be a problem. Jaden, Caiden, would you like to take your mages and show them around. For the time being, we can house them in my cabin. Alex, would you like to assist Mikhail and move Nikolai into the spare room in your cabin please?’ The Leader asked of the Italian, who nodded and disappeared from sight. The twins, with Quinn’s assistance led the mages out of the Circle and off for a tour of the Sanctuary.
‘Tristan, may I have a word with you please?’ The Leader asked before the mages were led out. Tristan, looking equal parts surprised and concerned, walked slowly back to the Leader, his eyes fixed on the ground in front of him. Johan was watching as the brown haired mage was summoned before the Leader before he himself was taken out of the Circle.
‘Is something wrong?’ Lachlan asked of the mage.
‘No sir.’ Tristan said shaking his head frantically.
‘You don’t need to call me sir.’ The Leader said warmly, the tone of his voice piquing Tristan’s curiosity and he looked up into the frail Leader’s face. ‘I just wanted to have a word with you, and see how you’re adjusting.’
‘Because of what I said yesterday?’ Tristan said looking back to the ground sadly, his hands fidgeting with each other in front of him.
‘I’ll admit, that particular word I do not like hearing, and I’m sorry if I seemed overly aggressive toward you.’ The Leader said softly.
‘I’m sorry I said it. I’ve only been with the Order for a few months, and it was all I ever heard when they were talking about you guys, or even us. I promise I won’t say it anymore.’ Tristan pleaded. The Leader scanned the mages thoughts and saw congruence between his thoughts and his words.
‘Let’s forget about it.’ Lachlan said with a small wave of the hand. ‘Why did you want to remain here?’
‘I liked that there has been a mage here before. And the Witch husband of Alex will be here too. I feel… welcome here.’ Tristan confessed, again Lachlan sensing his thoughts and words to be genuine.
‘Fair enough. Come with me and I’ll introduce you to Grayson. He was the one trained by the mage.’ The Leader said with a smile, placing a hand behind the mage’s back and guiding him out of the Circle.
‘Did you know the Archivist well?’ Tristan asked as they emerged from the Circle and walked across the gathering field.
‘Well enough I guess.’ The Leader replied genuinely. ‘We’ve had several encounters before, and have an understanding.’ Tristan nodded at this and continued the walk in silence.
‘Here we are.’ Lachlan said stepping up onto the back deck of his private cabin. ‘Grayson, I would like you to meet one of the mages, Tristan. He has chosen to remain with us because of our connections to the magical.’
‘Pleasure to meet you Tristan.’ Grayson said stepping out of the lounge and shaking hands with the brown haired mage.
‘Thank you sir.’ Tristan said respectfully.
‘Oh that’s enough of that.’ Grayson said with a laugh. ‘Would you like to take a walk with me?’ He asked of the mage who readily agreed, his eyes alight with awe.
‘See you guys.’ Lachlan said stepping inside to the gathered mages, Rama on the other side of the room spotted his husband and beamed a bright smile.
‘Shall I move our stuff somewhere else?’ The Egyptian asked telepathically.
‘Move them to our cabin.’ Jaden intruded on the private conversation of the Leader and his husband.
‘Or to ours.’ Alex interceded. Lachlan smiled warmly to the two men and nodded to his husband.
‘You decide my love.’ The Leader said with a smile.
‘Alright, so, we have four rooms here, and eight of you to sleep. We’ll get some more bed’s to sleep you all comfortably, but, for now, pick yourselves a room and a roommate. It will only be for a few days.’ Lachlan said to the mages, the seven present mages all talking amongst themselves as they scattered about the cabin with Rama telekinetically moving his and Lachlan’s personal items to another cabin.
‘I’m sorry we’re intruding on your private cabin Alex.’ The Leader yet again apologised to the Italian as the four men sat down in the living room. Alex smiled to the frail man and pulled him into a hug.
‘I’ve told you three times now, it is quite alright, and an honour to have you.’ Alex said genuinely.
‘I didn’t realise Grayson was going to invite Tristan to stay with him and the twins.’ Rama added taking his husband under his arm tenderly.
‘If either of you apologise once more, I’m going to throw you out.’ Alex laughed as his husband crawled into his lap for a cuddle.
‘Okay, okay, point taken.’ Lachlan said with a coy grin.
‘I would like to help with the house construction if I might.’ Quinn said quietly from somewhere near his husbands armpit.
‘Of course you can. I was thinking, as we’re making the cabins for the mages, perhaps you might help with the felling of the trees.’ Rama mentioned, the blonds face appearing from the Italian’s armpit, a curious look upon it.
‘How can I help with that?’ Quinn queried.
‘Well, as I said, the cabins will be for the mages, and we know that the forests surrounding the Sanctuary are abundant with spirits. Would you be willing to ask of them that we can use their trees for the cabins?’ Rama elaborated for the Canadian.
‘Of course I can do that. I’d be happy to do that.’ Quinn said smiling, his husband surreptitiously pulling him closer with pride.
‘Excellent.’ Rama announced happily. ‘We’ll start on that tomorrow morning after breakfast.’
‘And with that, we should probably get some sleep.’ The Leader said stifling a yawn.
‘It’s definitely been a busy day.’ Alex said yawning himself.
‘Come then neteru, let’s get to bed.’ Rama said standing up and lifting his husband into his arms. ‘Night guys.’ The Egyptian said as he carried Lachlan down the hallway.
‘Bedtime my love?’ Alex asked of his husband, who nodded against the Italian’s shoulder. Alex stood up, lifting his husband deftly and taking him to bed.
The sun was high in the clear sky, the grassy field bathed in sunlight as it swayed gently in the light breeze. Alex looked down to the grass in front of him and watched curiously as a splash of red sprayed the grass at his feet. Confusedly, he put a hand to his chest and felt moisture. Turning his hand over, he saw blood on his hand and staggered to his knees in shock.
‘No, oh god. Please, no!’ A voice called as Alex’s vision blurred. The Italian fell backward, sprawled out on the grass as a person fell to their knees at the Italian’s head. The person began pulling Alex’s head into his lap, tears falling on the Italian’s face.
‘Please, please don’t go.’ The voice begged of him.
‘I’m so sorry.’ Alex spoke in a deep, unwavering voice. ‘I love you.’
